We set up a serious piece of kit for you to use and populate. The server equipment is soak tested for over 168 hours. We do everything we can to ensure the server will be secure on the Internet.

Below is a typical server hardware, software and housing specification:

Hardware.

  • AMD Duron 900Mhz.
  • Baby ATX high performance motherboard.
  • 1Gb RAM.
  • 2x 40Gb UDMA IDE Hard Disks. These drives are set in a Raid-1 Mirror configuration, using a hardware IDE raid card.
  • 2U Steel chassis server rack case with additional fans.
  • 2 x 3Com 100Mbit Network card.

Bandwidth.

10Mbit/s link to Linx. Linx is the growing backbone of U.K internet services.

1Mbit/s international link.

Software.

Our servers are RedHat based. RedHat Linux is one of the most rapidly developing and widely supported distributions of Linux. The drivers for all the latest equipment are always readily available for RedHat. With big players like I.B.M and Intel behind Redhat, its well supported.

The services above are all standard on our servers. We chose to install all these services as they are most commonly used. Its our little bit to get you started.

SSL (Secure Socket Layer)

Used to provide encrypted channels for hosted services. E.G. HTTPS

SSH (Secure Shell).

This is basicly encrypted Telnet. This means no-one can monitor your connection to the server and steal your passwords.

Portsentry and other port monitoring tools.

These tools monitor the connections to the server for any strange activity. Anyone trying to probe the server's ports or overload its services will be denied all contact.

Sendmail.

Sendmail is your SMTP (outgoing) mail server. Our sendmail setup requires users to authenticate themselves. This means you and/or your customers can use our SMTP facilities from any dialup, anywhere in the world. This is a very convenient service which I'm yet to find implemented with any of the main stream ISPs.

POP3.

The server is capable of hosting pop3 mailboxes for general mail and/or mail for domains.
WEB Mail
The server has WEB based access to all hosted mail boxes.

HTTP & HTTPS (Apache).

This is the web server. By default it is capable of running HTTPS secure encrypted connections. Useful if you want WEB and/or E-Commerce content where people provide personal details.

PHP 4.x.

PHP is the up and coming language for producing dynamic WEB content. It's like C/C++ to use and can seamlessly use an SQL server for producing data-rich WEB pages.

Webalizer.

More WEB statistics for any hosted domain than you can shake a stick at. Want an example? visit http://www.crosswired.org.uk/webalizer

IP Traffic Accounting.

By default each member gets their own IP address so with the software we install you can keep tabs on the traffic your IP address generates and that of any domains you host.

Big Brother.

This is a monitoring tool for monitoring the health of the server. It monitors the server and most of the services it runs, plus any other specialised services you may use. Visit http://deimos.crosswired.org.uk/bb/ and try clicking on the status lights for more details.
MySQL.
This is a superb Linux SQL server. MySQL is a totally scalable database server.
Real Media - Basic Server.

This is a superb peice of kit for streaming media. Our server is suited for light user of this media streaming software.

Housing

The server is housed in a sturdy rackmount case and is located in Telehouse, London. Telehouse is the leading site in the U.K for housing Internet servers. Standard features include:

  • Air-conditioned racks.
  • Backup power supply.
  • Secure premises.
  • Remote reboot facilities.
  • Technicians available for any 'emergency' work.
