| We are currently in talks with a new coop starting up called Mindfridge.org (http://www.mindfridge.org). We are just running over any ideas that could benefit both our coops. Check them out, they are looking for brave pioneers looking to enter the big brave world of Internet servers.

We now have the use of an APC Master Switch meaning we can control the power to the two Project Crosswired servers in the Manchester rack.
The server in London has allways had this feature via our provider there.

As memory is so cheap now we have decided to fit out every server with 1GB of RAM !!
Any why not :-) |

Our third server will be called Miranda.
I've ordered the hardware for the server and some more memory for our very first cooperative server, phobos.
Miranda will have a Duron 900Mhz processor (runs nice and cool)
512MB of RAM.
The remaining spec will be much the same as shown in the server features web page.

Our move to our own IP blocks seems to have gone very nicely. Most of the domains hosted appear to work fine now.
We are now pretty much ready for our move to our new rack this October.

We have confirmed that we will be taking our own rack at IF in Manchester. Our future plans include: being multi-homed, full RIPE members and in time obtaining our own AS number.
For the current Project Crosswired members we also intend to set up a dedicated hot standby failover web/mail server.
Keep an eye on the Cooperatives (green section of menu) area of our site. We intend to develop it into a full blown resource for anyone thinking of setting up their own cooperative.
Also watch out for our hosting deals. |

We now have 5 new members waiting for the new (3rd) server, due to go live around October 6th along with our new rack. That leaves just 4 seats on what will probably be the last native Project Crosswired server for a while.
Also we will help you set up your own cooperative and can even offer hosting for your server(s). |

| Thanks to John K for spotting Titan was in trouble. There appears to be a problem where memory is being eaten alive. This has happened twice now, however most recently it was left un-checked and Titan ground to a halt. Both myself and Barry are looking into this and if necessary we will be paying a visit to the rack in London on Saturday 17th. |

It has been brought to our attention that some members are having problems with receiving email.
Some of these problems are due to the fact we have certain measures in place to prevent our servers being spamed or used to spam. I will never cease to be amazed at how some/most I.S.Ps leave their mail servers open to spam if only to have some peace and quite from their users. We, the members of Project Crosswired are intelligent people and I feel we can do much better than this.
Below are some points to remember with regards to our servers receiving email:
Mails from nobody@ will be rejected. This is because many apache web servers run as nobody and mail from nobody is usual either spam or the result of a poorly configured mail script.
Mails from an unresolved domain name are rejected. I think this one speaks for it's self. What is going on when a remote mail server connects to us with no resolvable domain.
Our mail servers consult the RBH service (Real-time Black Hole) to make sure the sending mailserver and address are not black listed for spaming on the Internet.
Hope this helps. |

It only seems like yesterday when myself and a long time friend Barry were talking about how we could afford a server with a GOOD spec and bandwidth. Our idea of sharing the server with others sounded good at the time but we were not sure if we could get people with a open attitude to work together. Well, Project Crosswired has been a storming success.
The time has come that we need even more flexibility, its time we had our own RACK!
Myself and Barry have formed a company to run a rack. We're not out to do bulk stuff-it and host-it services, there are plenty of companies out there if you just want to host a bunch of bog standard web sites. We intend to provide a central resource for both Project Crosswired's utilisation and that of other coops. We're going to share the knowledge and experience we've gained in running Project Crosswired in an aim to help other people start their own cooperatives..... and if those new cooperatives would like a server host that is understanding and amenable to their needs as a cooperative then we can host the server in the rack too.
Anyway, thats all I can say for now as we have many many details to iron out. We have a pencil date for the launch of the rack which is Saturday the 5th of October.
If you have any comments then either post them here or mail myself or Barry:

Just a reminder for the members - all members - to check before removing existing directories in their home directories. In a recent instance, removal of a dir which was referenced by another program, effectively broke that program for everone.
If in doubt, ask. If it was in your home dir when you first got there, then it was there for a reason.

Saturday was a very busy day. We've got our new server in the racks and its fully functional.
It all started with myself and Barry driving down to London, early Saturday morning (way too early for my liking :-)
The server was quickly put in the racks and went live at approximately 12:10 that afternoon.
Project Crosswired now have over 3 times the number of members it started with. Already were showing need for some form of formal control. In the near future I intend to develop some web based management systems for the members use with regards to faults, features etc issues. This would make inter-member communications more efficient and keep everyone more informed. |

The hardware is ordered and it looks like we will be installing the new server on Saturday the 2nd of June. We have just taken on another new member so there are only two spaces remaining on the new server, plus we have two hopefuls at this moment in time.
So roll up get them spaces while their hot :-) |

Sendmail has not been authenticating users for SMTP relay these last few days.
Barry has now sorted this problem out. Something to do with some herbert changing a folders permissions in the /var directory. (prob me :-) |

We are aiming for a rollout date of mid June for our next server.
We are looking at a spec along the lines of:
Skt 370 M/b with on board RAID
Celeron 700Mhz
2 x 40Gb IDE HD
N.I.C
CD-ROM
256Mb DIMM PC100
Copper heatsink
1U Case
At the moment four spaces are filled on the new server. We intend the new server to hold nine members. |

| I've upgraded the mysql server from 3.22 to 3.23. One of the major features is that it now support TEMPORARY tables. |
The previous version was right in /usr/local the new version is now in the correct place /usr/local/mysql.
I've updated webmin etc so things should be ok. Let me know if there are any problems.

| We are on our way to having enough new members for our SECOND server. |
We currently have two new members who will be temporarily housed on our existing server. We also have two other people who could be joining soon.
So if your thinking of joining Project Crosswired theres no better time than over the next few months.
