Server Colocation with Crosswired

Project Crosswired is sponsored and operated from the racks of Crosswired Limited. Crosswired is a colocation and solution provider. Crosswired is committed to fueling the growth of cooperatively owned servers. Cooperatively owning a server allows the cooperative members to have better hardware and more bandwidth.

Crosswired Limited was formed by the two founders of Project Crosswired (Jonathan Spooner and Barry O'Neill) as a means of continuing our work. Project Crosswired currently has three native servers which is about our personal limit. Through the help we can provide and if you choose, the hosting facilities we now provide we aim to grow the cooperative even further providing bandwidth and hosting at prices that can only be achieved through growth.

As you may of already read, a cooperative has some rather unique requirements of their host, both organisational and in infrastructure. We've already experienced the many gotchas and human issues in running a cooperative server, hence were both aware of your needs and very accommodating.

We've run cooperative servers since October 2000, in this time we've identified many unique needs of a cooperative. For those who co-locate their servers with us we provide tools and procedures to help run your cooperative server and fuel the cooperative community as a whole.

Some of the tools we provide include:

Bandwidth usage monitors
When running a cooperative depending on the type of bandwidth package you've bought, you may well want some detailed information on your bandwidth usage. We provide this, including usage by IP address.
Big Brother server services monitor
Its nice to see at a glance if all the services on your server are running. If you wish we can have Big Brother monitor your server.
Community Knowledge Base
One thing we've learned is that the group knowledge between cooperative members is a very valuable thing. The community knowledge base allows ALL cooperative members with Crosswired to exchange ideas and tips. Remember everyone on the knowledge base is already savvy with the issues regarding cooperative servers and their configuration.
F.A.Q O'Matic
This is a nice little tool that archives all previously asked questions.
Server Configuration Journal (Available Soon)
We found this an invaluable resource. If a member has a problem or query regarding a server's current state of configuration they can look it up here. For security reasons you may opt to restrict access to your server's configuration journal.
Cooperative Documentation
Further cooperative documentation, including the issues to consider when configuring the various services of a new server.

The prices shown below are for genuine cooperatives only. If you want to host a commercial server then please visit our commercial site, crosswired.co.uk.

We provide bandwidth in two distinct methods. Fisrtly we provide it on a buy what you need basis. Secondly we provide bandwidth on a share of our resources basis.

Note, 1U is 1.75 inch in height. Rack mount server cases are measured in Us. You can put a server with two HDs and 2 NICs in a 1U case! So the smaller your server the more you save. Rackspace is a valuable resource, hence we charge £15per U. If you need a lot of space then contact us.

The products below all burst to 10Mbit/s.

Pay as you go (up to 10GB per month).

For usage up to 10GB per month we allow you to pay for what you use. This way you do not pay for bandwidth that is never used. This method is almost unique to Crosswired.

At the end of each month we record how many gigabytes of traffic your server has generated/received and simply bill you for it on a £6 per gigabyte used basis.

EG. You have a 1U server. At the end of the month we find you've used 3.5GB. You are then billed £15 for the 1U of rack space plus £24 for the bandwidth you've used, total £39 + VAT.

Buy what you need (monthly)

This bandwidth is sold on a per GB used per month basis. If on a particular month you go a little over into the next band like most other providers we will NOT penalise you. We will give you three chances for running over into the next band. When this has happened three times you need to look at purchasing banwidth from the next band up or you will be charged £6 per GB over your present band.

Bandwidth in GB 1U 2U 3U 4U
10GB £60 £75 £90 £105
20GB £90 £105 £120 £135
40GB £150 £165 £180 £195

Share of our our total bandwidth

This method of pricing works well for our native Crosswired servers. For this generous offer to work we have to be sensible. We are selling a fair share of our bandwidth that is available at any time. What do we mean by this? We have a 10Mbit/s network and with this option your server is connected directly to it! If on any one month there was plenty of spare bandiwdth and it just happens your server made use of it then fine, we've already paid for it so no harm done. What this offer is not, is 10Mbit/s dedicated connectivity for £205 + VAT per month.... no host could offer this and stay in business.

We've made this method of purchasing connectivity available because when we started our first cooperative server the biggest problem was "how do we share the bandwidth?" and "What happens if we run over?" as you may well know most colo hosts only sell bandwidth on a banded basis as above and heavily penalise those that run over their band.... they make more money this way.

Bandwidth in GB 1U 2U 3U 4U
N/A £220 £235 £250 £265

All prices are ex-VAT.
